In 1898 the American public got its first glimpse of practical remote-controlling via a boat from none other than inventor and professional crazy person, Nikola Tesla. He later went home to talk to pigeons and develop a death ray. Fifty years later the first television remote control was introduced by one Eugene Polley. Called the Lazy Bone, it was the beginning of the classic American couch potato image. Now that families were able to change the channel; and adjust the volume from a distance, we became an unstoppable force of Dick van Dyke Show watching superhumans. This primate piece of technology though used a cord that connected the handheld device to the television set.
A mere six years later, America got sick and tired of the cord connected remote and upgraded to the Space Command remote control. Housewives could now iron the sheets in the next room and still have control over the television set. Using an array of NASA level technology featuring high-frequency ultrasonic sound waves for the ultimate wireless experience making us feel like astronaut space explorers in the comfort our own homes. “What a time to be alive,” the housewife sighed as she readjusted her girdle.
Now, how could all of this result in the downfall of society (as shown in the title of this infographic)? Well it’s not all just channel surfing and muted commercials, no sir. Remote control technology has a more sinister side that you’ll be able to learn all about by reading the rest of this infographic. Let us know what you think in the comments.
