Today, connecting with your customers is more important than ever. In the past, companies used to pour countless dollars into expensive brand messages that bombarded customers over the radio, on billboards, and through television commercials. Marketing is no longer a one way conversation with advertisers broadcasting messages to consumers.
Today, marketing is a conversation where customers are able to talk about and even interact with the brand they love in hate on the world wide web. In this new world of marketing, companies and brands have to be more conscious of what is being said about them online. People are going to talk about your brand whether you like it or not. Engaging in the conversation is one way to control what is being said.
To give just a quick example, I took a KLM flight recently from New York to Amsterdam. Right after landing the flight attendant got on the microphone to announce that we had arrived safely. She informed the the passengers about the weather, connecting flight information, and informed us that if we “tweeted” at KLM, someone would respond to the tweet within one hour.
Times are changing and those who don’t keep up with the times will be left behind.
Lastly, in case you or your company is second guess this new marketing strategy, consider this. Engaging with your customers on an emotional level will make them much more likely to stay loyal to your company in the future. Just think about the power of making even 1 customer happy. Now imagine the power of changing an unsatisfied customer into a satisfied one. The economic impact of this can be huge. Plus, it’s just good business
