Some of the best moments in sports happen when Max Kellerman sticks a microphone in front of a boxer. Russian fighter Sergey Kovalev remained undefeated last night on HBO dispatching the limited Cedric Agnew over 7 rounds. He gave Kellerman the customary victory interview which always includes the question,

“Who’s next?”

Sergey Kovalev was supposed to fight the champion next, but that was before Adonis Stevenson bolted from an agreement and signed with another television network last week.

Stevenson says there never was an agreement and he’s simply following the money.

Boxing is currently embroiled in a pissing contest known as the “Cold War” which prevents many of the top fighters from facing each other. Two boxers claim to be champion of the light heavyweight division, but they won’t fight each other because the reigning champion will only fight on Showtime and the #1 contender only fights for HBO.

Kovalev and Stevenson were close to a deal with each side accusing the other of lying.

Barreling through his post-fight interview in English, without much use for his translator, Kovalev dropped this gem in regards to the situation,

“I don’t want to speak about Adonis Stevenson. Adonis Stevenson’s a piece of s***. Sorry for my English,” Kovalev said.

Adonis Stevenson, who goes by the nickname “Superman”, was quick to respond on Twitter to both Kovalev and his management team.

Stevenson promised to hospitalize Sergey Kovalev should they ever meet in the ring. Of course he did.

Adonis Stevenson then engaged with senior ESPN boxing writer Dan Rafael.

Sergey Kovalev and Adonis Stevenson will not meet this year thanks to the business of boxing. Can’t we all just get along?
