Wil Wheaton frequently treks comic book and Star Trek conventions, and a video uploaded in June 2013 of the actor responding to a little girl’s question is making the rounds again.
Hitting the #2 trending topic on Facebook today, the video saw a major resurgence over the weekend after it hit the front page on Reddit.
The young girl asks, “When you were a kid, were you called a nerd, and if so, how did you deal with it?”
Wheaton goes on to answer the question over several minutes, getting applause from the audience and tugging at our heart strings along the way.
Here are just a few highlights:
“We don’t choose to be nerds. We can’t help it that we like these things, and we shouldn’t apologize for liking these things.”
“When a person makes fun of you, when a person is cruel to you, it has nothing to do with you. It’s not about what you said, it’s not about what you did, it’s not about what you love. It’s about them feeling bad about themselves.”
“Don’t let them make you feel bad because you love a thing. Maybe find out what they love, and talk about how they love it. You just love different things.”
The video currently has over 530,000 views, and yesterday afternoon Wil Wheaton tweeted the following:
Seriously, though, if all I’m remembered for is telling a little girl that it’s OK to be a nerd, and to be compassionate, I’m ok with that.
