Actress Lupita Nyong’o was recently named People Magazine‘s Most Beautiful Person of 2014, despite the fact that practically no one can pronounce her name right.
The 31-year-old Kenyan actress is quickly becoming a household name after taking home a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in 12 Years a Slave. Too bad most households in America can’t figure out how to say that name correctly.
It’s pretty much another “Adele Dazim” situation, but instead of a veteran actor embarrassing a talented and upcoming young actress in front of millions of people, it’s a dozen or so local news anchors who probably would have been better off referring to Nyong’o as “that girl from 12 Years a Slave. No, not the bitchy white one. The slave girl from that horrifying scene where she … yeah … yeah that one. Yeah.”
Anyway, Jimmy Kimmel chronicled these news anchor mishaps for Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, and like most Jimmy Kimmel videos, it was pretty much destined to go viral on YouTube the next day (it’s true, the dude’s videos have earned over 1.5 billion views on YouTube to date).
Before you watch the video above, answer honestly: can you pronounce Lupita Nyong’o?
