On the interview day, you dress to impress and go to the interview location with full confidence. However, when you get into the interview room, there is a surprise for you. There are a bunch of other candidates waiting to interview for the same position as well. Suddenly, you start to feel intimidated and all of your confidence fades away.


Don’t let this happen to you. Group interviews can be more competitive and exhausting compared to individual interviews but if you play your cards right, there is no reason why you cannot get the job. Follow the below tips to be successful in group interviews.


1. Do Your Homework before the Interview: This is a must for all the interviews. You should research the company very well before the interview. You should go beyond just looking at the company website. Look at news websites, press releases and find financial reports about the company if you can. In addition, try to learn as much about the role you are interviewing for as you can. If you know someone working for the company you are interviewing for, meet with him/her to get insight information.


2. Introduce Yourself: Prepare a one-minute introduction about yourself and during the interview, introduce yourself to interviewers as well as to your fellow interviewees. Be polite and friendly but don’t be too talkative. Also, remember that what you say and how you compose yourself is important and it is an indicator to separate you from the rest of the interviewees.


3. Listen to Others: One of the reasons why companies make group interviews is that they want to observe your people skills. They want to find out more if you can work in a team environment plus how your communication and leadership skills are. Therefore, it is very important to listen to others and work with them and not only compete with them. Obviously it is very important to stand out from the rest but you should not be aggressive towards other candidates. Conversely, you should be very constructive and be able to build upon their ideas.


4. Take Notes and Don’t be Shy: Finally, while other candidates are speaking, take notes so that if a debate comes up, you can refer to their points. Don’t be shy and be sure to speak up to express your ideas but also, don’t interrupt other people while they are speaking. Try to include quieter people to the conversation as well and ask their opinions. This is a great way to show that you have leadership skills plus you are a real team player.
