If you didn’t get the memo just yet, visual content is killing it. You’ve got to keep up with the times: attention spans are at a record low. People will do anything possible to avoid reading a few lines. So show them what they want…in a glimpse!
For many, pictures alone are a good reason enough to share your post. Your great header picture is just a start: give people the rich content and complementary visual assets that they will share across their channels.
But… aren’t infographics dead?
If you think that infographics and the like are passé, think again! Tons of people on the Internet are still looking for them. Just take a look at the Google Trends for the keyword “infographic”: search doesn’t show any sign of slowing down. What’s more, Google is forecasting growth over the next year.
Here’s an interesting graph for those who aren’t actually reading this post:
If you’re not convinced yet and think that infographics have become boring after some time, maybe you just need to spice up your relationship with them. No need to settle with the old static infographic – give the new formats a shot: welcome the gifographic and the SlideShare infographic for increased interactivity!
Repurposing what already performs well
Creating visual content can take a lot of time and resources. If you are going to spend more than a day creating something, it has to be worth it. One way to prevent the “damp squib” is to look at what’s already performing well in other formats, like text posts on your blog. Take a look at your best performing pieces (either by the number of pageviews, social shares or conversions) and what is trending elsewhere using tools like TrendSpottr. Checklists, how-tos and comparison posts are all good examples of content that’s easy to re-enact visually.
For example, one of our blog posts, 10 CMOs Who Are Kicking Ass (And What You Can Learn From Them) did fairly well on the Uberflip Hub with over 2,600 pageviews. We repurposed that piece of content into a SlideShare, which is not only a great vehicle for visual content but also a great distribution channel. We were able to reach 7,550 additional views using the same exact list as in the initial blog post.
Where to start when you’re not a designer
Just like SaaS marketing tools have solved a lot of IT headaches for marketers, you can now count on web apps that will make your life much easier when it’s time to create visual content. Without installing any software like Photoshop or Illustrator, you can now take advantage of tools like Canva that will bring all the magic online for free.
I won’t lie to you, I have the worst artistic skills. If I can make this tool work for me, anyone can!
