So you have a passion to write about a topic. You believe you can write better about this topic better than anyone else. In fact you cannot sleep at night because you have so many ideas running through your head. And while you can find great articles and workshops on how to: blog, obtain advertisers, be kind to your fellow bloggers and to design your layout, you haven’t really received guidelines on how to work the events you attend so you can write about later.
As a company who works with bloggers year round, we see all types of bloggers, from the occasional writer to the serious full-time making money from their website blogger. We love working with bloggers and want to see each one grow and develop. You may have started your blog and that is half the battle, but getting valuable guidance is often another one. However, do not fear. This article is packed with tips to assist those in the blog-sphere who attend media parties or events continue to or begin to receive invites as media personnel. There were so many tips, that it was best to break them up into two articles so be sure to check out part 2 which will be published in the next few days.
If you follow these tips, you will see more brands take your blog just as serious as other traditional media outlets.
1. First things first. Your invite to media receptions or events are for you as a blogger to meet and learn about the product(s) being presented. The goal from the host (and their public relations professional) is to provide you with enough information for you to share details with your readers. Therefore, if you are invited to a food tasting event, you should spend time with the staff and chef to learn the details about what is being prepared for you.
2. Stay focused on the purpose of why you are in attendance. This goes hand in hand with the first tip, but definitely warrants being called out separately. It is great to see old friends, but you can always catch up at the end of the night or grab a bite after the event to chat it up. Just remember the more time you do not spend learning about the product or event or who else is in attendance, the more likely your article will reflect the generic information the brand or host has already released to the public. Don’t forget your purpose for even being a blogger is to provide a unique perspective to your field. If you cannot bring a unique perspective, your attendance may not be desired in the future. While we, at Above Promotions Company, strive to help make introductions amongst attendees, this should not be relied upon. Remember, you need to be the one focused on the purpose of you attending the event.
3. Follow instructions provided by the host or public relations (pr) professional on how to gain admittance to the event. Applications have a purpose to the host or pr professional. Even if you were informed you are approved to attend in an email, phone call or random in-person conversation, you should still complete any official instructions. Circumventing the process could leave you at the door wondering why you cannot enter the event, make you question why your name is not listed on a reserved seating list or leave the host to think your pass is more hassle than help if they have to stop what they’re doing at their event to look into getting you in the door.
4. Attending events as a blogger means you must constantly stay in relationship building mode. Arriving to an event as though you somehow have a great privilege over others is not a good way to build a relationship with the host, other bloggers nor other attendees who are your potential readers. Long story short, your blogging career does not provide you with diva or don or VIP status at an event. Your invite is a show of respect for your work and in relationship building. Any other attitude is a sure-fire way to not get another invite or to be skipped over for exclusive events.
If you have ever wondered how other bloggers you know receive exclusive information, products or invites, it is because they use the tips above. Liked these tips? Well stay tuned for the remaining four which will be published next week. One of the next four tips will dive into the importance of organizing your article before posting it.
