In Aretha Franklin’s upcoming album, Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics, she takes her own soulful spin on Adele’s 2011 award-winning hit “Rolling in the Deep.”
Not only does Franklin sing an impressive interpretation of the song, with vocal runs and force to boot, she also incorporates the chorus from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”
Franklin is 72 now and entered the music business more than 50 years ago. One would think all the years of belting powerful notes would tire her out, but she’s still great and gives singers a quarter of her age a run for their money.
However talented Aretha is, some listeners are questioning if she used Auto-Tune for the track or at the least it was over-produced, according to The Washington Post. Auto-Tune can be used to correct a pitch or produce a unique sound for the singer. While many singers use the tool, Franklin fans were shocked to think the diva known for “Respect” would use or need it.
The track list for Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics is:
1. “At Last” (Etta James Cover)
2. “Rolling In The Deep” (Adele Cover)
3. “Midnight Train To Georgia” (Gladys Knight and The Pips Cover)
4. “I Will Survive” (Gloria Gaynor Cover)
5. “People” (BarbraStreisand Cover)
6. “No One” (Alicia Keys Cover)
7. “I’m Every Woman” (Chaka Khan Cover) / “Respect”
8. “Teach Me Tonight” (Dinah Washington Cover)
9. “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” (The Supremes Cover)
10. “Nothing Compares 2 U” (Sinéad O’Connor Cover)
The album is scheduled to release Oct. 21 on RCA Records. Its co-producer is Franklin and Sony Music Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Clive Davis.
If Adele didn’t know she made it as an artist through her many awards and acclaim, then she definitely knows it now by the queen Aretha Franklin featuring her song on a track list as epic as this one.
