A New Kind of Athlete – Professional Gamers [Infographics]

There’s a new kind of athlete on the horizon—gamers are the new professional athletes. In July 2013, the U.S. government officially recognized game players as professional athletes. Foreign gamers frequently face issues remaining in the U.S. There are several U.S. visas professional athletes can be granted, and the O-1 Visa covers athletes. Athletes must show extraordinary ability in their field to qualify for the athlete visa.

The League of Legends Championship Series is a recognized sport like NHL and NBA. The event is so large that it’s held in three locations, including the massive Staples Center in Los Angeles. Professional gaming and eSports is growing in North America and Europe. In 2002, American company Major League Gaming was co-founded by Sundance DiGiovanni and Mike Speso. Their tournaments grew only by word-of-mouth. Eventually, broadcasters aired professional gaming tournaments as a sport. Today’s MLG tournaments are live streamed in HD.

Some of the top celebrity gamers include Cameron Diaz, Vin Diesel, Megan Fox and Daniel Craig. The most popular games among this crowd include World of Warcraft, Dungeons and Dragons, Mortal Kombat and Halo.
