2014 is going to be a big year as the country will witness General Elections. The two big parties of the country – The Indian National Congress and The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have turned themselves on full volume for election campaigning. Along with other mediums, social media is playing a big role at least for pointing fingers, verbal fights and creating controversies. The new controversy netizens are witnessing specially on Twitter is associated with Sardar Patel.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, who is often addressed as ‘Sardar’ or Chief in Hindi, was one of the leaders of the Indian National Congress and one of the founding fathers of the Republic of India. The social leader of India who played an unparalleled role in the country’s struggle for independence has suddenly become the center point of controversy, following an interview by Gujarat’s CM Narendra Modi.

While talking to Daily Bhaskar in an exclusive interview, Narendara Modi, who is quite excited about inaugurating the “Statue of Unity” in the state, stated that the country’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru was not present at the funeral procession of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The Gujarat CM even claimed that Nehru hadn’t tried to contact Patel’s daughter Maniben even once after his death.

The Gujarat CM, who is building the 182 meter tall “Statue of Unity” in the memory of Sardar, is collecting iron from households from over seven lakh villages across India. The initiative that has already faced some objections from the Congress party, has now received a ferocious reply too on the statements made by Modi on Nehru’s absence at Patel’s funeral.

According to the Congress party, the thoughts shared by Modi are misleading and in fact Jawaharlal Nehru was present in the funeral of Sardar. This has led to a new fight on Twitter; Sardar Patel has been trending for some time now. Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has been tweeting quite aggressively highlighting the fact that Nehru was indeed present at the funeral.
