Success isn’t measured by

money or power or social rank.

Success is measured by

your discipline and inner peace.

Mike Ditka

Life has undoubtedly thrown you a curve-ball or two along the way. You have very likely had your share of hard times when you felt unsettled by past events or about things to come. That amount of discomfort can lead to inner turmoil. It is absolutely natural to be affected by what is happening around you. But, it is also entirely possible to separate how you feel about something from your core of inner calmness and peace. The minute you begin to let emotions take constant hold of your soul, life suddenly becomes out of balance and chaotic. One of the keys is to learn what it means to find true inner peace. Here are a few suggestions.

1. Fully accept your limitations. As much as you may sometimes feel the urge to give everything you have to pacify, o to try to control a situation, there may very well be some things that are well beyond your ability to resolve.

  • Learn to accept what you can and cannot change. It is okay to not know all the answers!

  • Instead of allowing guilt to eat away at you, feel at peace with the fact that you did all that you could.

  • While there will be always room to push yourself a little harder, avoid doing so to the point of burning yourself out.

2. Keep your conscience clear. No one ever promised you that life would be a bed of roses. But as long as you act according to what your conscience dictates, you can hold your head high and be proud of your actions and choices!

  • The heaviness that you sometimes carry around with you is really unnecessary, especially when you know that you have not intentionally wronged anyone.

  • If you have come to terms with and accepted the part you played in the outcome of a situation, acknowledge this in the open and move on!

  • The more honest you are with others, the easier it is to be to be honest with yourself.

3. Always be kind. Before every interaction with another person, remind yourself to be kind. At the end of the day, you will be surprised at how much more peaceful you will start to feel about everything!

  • The basic courtesies like “Please” and “Thank you” really do go a long way! Consciously spend more time using those terms and see how at ease it makes you feel.

  • Use every opportunity to help someone in need. It does not really matter what it is that they need. By giving your time or resources, you will almost always automatically feel that you have made a significant contribution toward completing part of your life mission.

4. Appreciate and acknowledge your blessings. Unfortunately in life, some desired achievements may elude you. At times like these, take a moment to look at what you have actually attained, completed and received. The extent of the blessings you already have might surprise you.

There is an old adage that says, ”The grass is greener on the other side.” And, most of the time, this seems true. But remember that everything is not always as rosy and easy as it seems. Instead of bemoaning what you have not achieved, consider what you already have. Doing this will help you feel more content with your life.

In a nutshell, true inner peace comes from being sincerely happy with who you are and what you have. Remember that there are people who yearn for what you already have. That should be enough to tell you that you have a lot.

Contentment is the most powerful key to true inner peace.

To your continued success!
