The Right Words Can Paint a Thousand Pictures

Any copywriter will tell you that. But a text-heavy website or poster without images looks dull at first glance – visually it’s unlikely to lure a reader in.

Great marketing materials combine sharp written communications with eye-catching imagery to engage consumers. When the two are working together effectively, the appeal of your product or service will increase.

Writing copy to accompany images, for example of your products, is a difficult skill though, so we’ve listed some tips to help you get it right:

  • Position images carefully. All of your images should be placed close to the copy that’s relevant to them, particularly if it’s not immediately apparent what they are showing. For a product description on a website, have the words that describe the product next to or beneath its image.

  • Using captions. If a web page or poster has a lot of images it can help to include captions for each one. The captions should point out what the service or product depicted can offer, or provide further details about it.

  • Don’t just describe the image. Whether writing a caption, or copy to go beside the image, your words shouldn’t signpost what the viewer can already see. Ensure your copy adds something – by listing unique selling points that aren’t readily apparent.

  • Don’t use the same descriptions. Even if a variety of your products are similar – like the same clothes in different colours – write a unique description for each one.

  • Don’t leave the image to do the work. Including an image doesn’t mean you can get away with sloppy copywriting. Make sure your copy is every bit as compelling as it would be if you were relying on it alone.
