WhatsApp, the mobile messaging app which is undoubtedly the most popular messaging app in the world and in the country has shared its latest India numbers. Founded in 2009, the messaging app had shared in the month of August that it had crossed 300 million active users globally. During the same time the company also revealed that the app processes 11 billion sent messages and 20 billion received messages, or 31 billion total on a daily basis. The app also sees 325 million photo uploads each day. At that time India was witnessing 20 million users.

Later in the month of November, in an interview to CNBCTV18 Neeraj revealed that the app was witnessing 25 million active users from the country.

Apparently the four year old messaging app in the country has been adding approximately 5 million active users every month.

The latest numbers come close on the heels of its second operator tie up with Tata Docomo in the country. The first being the Reliance deal which the company had launched for its GSM subscribers as part of a promotion and considered to be a success. According to the latest deal Tata Docomo will offer unlimited WhatsApp usage to its subscribers at Rs 15 for 15 days. Tata Docomo’s latest TVC highlights this too:

Social messaging apps have been a threat to the telecom providers when it comes to features like SMS which is more or less dying. Operator tie up is a way forward and Neeraj had mentioned in his interview that as a company they are looking forward to such deals.

I wonder how customers are going to take this when you are charged Re.1 for a day of Whatsapp-ing. This might appeal to the heavy users but will they be ready to pay for it or rather opt for a monthly internet package?
