Your email marketing campaign can be the bread and butter of your small business, but low quality emails can do more harm than good. Your emails have to be clear, compelling, and present real value to the reader.
Newman Was Wrong
In one episode of the TV show, Seinfeld, Newman the postal worker insisted there was no “junk mail” and every piece of mail requires just as much effort to deliver. He was wrong. There is a lot of junk mail and email, and you don’t want to be part of it. It is very easy to unsubscribe so make sure your readers get value every time they open your messages. One poor email could cost you a good portion of your list, so always ask yourself about the value they get out of the email, not the value you get.
Harmonize
The content in your marketing emails should be consistent with all of your content. Your brand’s voice may change a little bit over different platforms; your Facebook posts won’t exactly match your web content, but someone shouldn’t be surprised that your email is coming from the same company they know through another source.
Align Your Forces
An inconsistent voice can hurt you, but aligning your marketing channels to publicize the same promotions can bring incredible value. Seeing the same sale, product, or service mentioned multiple times leads to compounding awareness and likelihood of success.
Articulate
Your message needs to be very clear, and ideally be able to be understood in less than ten seconds, because that might be all the reader gives it before deciding to delete or click through. In order to do so, follow the old journalistic method of not burying the lead. Get the most important information out first, and edit mercilessly to remove any ambiguity or excess from your writing.
This May Be Your Last
Don’t think that your subscribers are less busy than you. Their time is valuable, and the unsubscribe link is just a click away. If you waste their time, you’re wasting one of your most valuable resources.
