With over 25 years of cumulative recruitment experience under R.JOHNSON’s belt, we have learned a thing or two about how to advance your career in the legal realm. When it comes to excelling at being a Legal Administrative Assistants (LAAs), here are five simple times to becoming an integral part of your law firm:
Be Nice to Your Boss
One of the single most effective methods of becoming an indispensable part of your law firm is to partner with your boss. Take the lead and think of yourself as an in-house administrative consultant; instead of working for your boss, work with your boss. Many people shy away from taking control and this is the wrong thing to do. You are an authority in your department. Own it and be accountable.
Take Initiative
Do you often think of ways to do things better at your firm? Do you shy away from giving these recommendations? Stop! Always look for new and better ways to improve processes and put it forward to your manager. Push yourself to continuously hunt for both small and large business improvements. Your law firm colleagues will thank you.
Know Your Law Firm
Do you know when your law firm was founded? How many offices does it have? How many lawyers work there? What are your firm’s practice areas? What is your firm’s mission statement? You should easily be able to recall of this information, as this is a key to becoming an integral part of your department. How will you be of value to your firm if you don’t know anything about it?
Dress the Part
“Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.” –Coco Chanel. This quote doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot of money. You can slowly improve your wardrobe over the course of your career. Find what works on your body type and invest in high quality pieces that you can mix and match. Remember, style is what makes you feel and look good.
Task Management
The LAA’s job is fast-paced with multiple responsibilities including calendar management, tracking meetings, and preparing legal correspondence. It’s essential that he or she stay organized to manage time and tasks accordingly. If the assistant doesn’t know how to keep track and prioritize what needs to be done, something might fall off the to-do list, causing a much worse situation down the road.
Legal Administrative Assistants handle the day-to-day administration for law firms. Because they are routinely called upon to make important decisions that represent the company, it’s no exaggeration to say that a lawyer is often only as good as their LAA.
