1. Be Mobile Friendly

There is a currently a big focus on creating mobile friendly websites and newsletters, but what about email signatures? The number of emails being read on a mobile is huge. When designing your email signature think about the size of any imagery and/or text that you are using. Any large images will often change the layout of your email. Be sure to do some testing before finalizing anything.

2. Comply With Legal Requirements

The legal disclaimer is the most important part of a business email signature. The laws and regulations of email disclaimers are tightening all around the world. The consequences can be up to €1000 per email and even prison time!

3. Use Your Company Branding

This might seem basic but you’d be surprised to hear how many companies simply don’t have their logo on every email! Companies spend large amounts of money developing their brand but often forget about email branding. Your logo is on your business card, it should also be on every email. Ensure that your signature includes consistent branding across the entire company.

4. Include Social Media

Social media is arguably the most popular form of marketing at the moment. So why not include it in your emails? The email signature is effectively the link between the two worlds of social media and email. However, this doesn’t mean inserting huge icons at the bottom. Be smart and professional, use small and well designed links. If someone wants to like your Facebook page they will find it.

5. Utilize Advertising

This is a relatively new feature of email signatures. Make the most of every email that you send by including a small, subtle image or text link for your latest promotion or event. Whether you use email signature software or not, advertising is worth considering. But be smart about it, don’t blast everyone with a flashing gif animation, be subtle. Most importantly, make sure that your ad is relevant to your contact database, otherwise you are just spamming your trusted contacts.
