Facebook Messenger 4.0 for iOS has been updated with several new features that give more group-based focus to the popular app.

The biggest update comes in the form of group chatting. Facebook users can now name group chats, set a photo for the group, and keep everyone in one chat, all from within the program.

If you want to send a message to someone not in the group you can tap on the desired message and hit the “Forward” button. You can also forward photos. According to the Facebook Messenger 4.0 app update page: “Forwarding: Want to send a message or photo to someone who isn’t in the conversation? Just tap to forward it.”While much of the functionality matches that of Messages for iPhone, the biggest updates may be under-the-hood and speed fixes that streamline Facebook Messenger.

The Facebook Messenger app for iOS is available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch running iOS 6.0 or later. As Facebook’s $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp has proven, the company is more focused than ever on mobile messaging and the future of mobile communications.

Group chats have always been a sore spot for Facebook Messenger users and this update seems like a move in the right direction. The biggest missing component at this time? Voice calling from within the app, a feature Facebook has announced as “coming soon” for WhatsApp.

Are you excited to see more Facebook group chatting coming to the company’s mobile platform?
