A number of employees took it to Twitter this morning to tell the new CEO of Mozilla, Brendan Eich, to ‘step down’, with nearly simultaneous tweets.
It began this morning with two tweets from Chris McAvoy, the Mozilla Open Badges project lead.
I love @mozilla but I'm disappointed this week. @mozilla stands for openness and empowerment, but is acting in the opposite way.

I'm an employee of @mozilla and I'm asking @brendaneich to step down as CEO.

According to several sources McAvoy was responding to the controversial decision to appoint the CEO position to Eich after he donated thousands of dollars to California’s Proposition 8 and political candidates who were in support of it.
Proposition 8 was a California state constitutional amendment and ballot initiative that said only marriage between a man and woman is valid or recognized in California.
In just minutes of his tweets other Mozilla employees followed his lead, outright copying the statements or creating similar tweets. Mozilla employees who backed McAvoy consist of designer Jessica Klein, Mozilla Festival curator Chloe Vareldi, engagement team member Sydney Moyer, and partnerships lead John Bevan.
McAvoy said shortly after that he feels fortunate that he works at a company where he can make such statements without ‘fear of retribution’.
