Amazon has finally confirmed the long standing rumors and announced its new game playing, movie streaming, voice activated set top box, dubbed the “Fire TV” and they are using one of America’s favorite crazy people to promote it.
Before we get to the Busey commercial, let me lay out what exactly the Fire TV is for you. Fire TV is Amazon’s answer to Apple TV, Roku and the Chromecast. It plugs into the back of your TV and gives access to Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, Plex, Amazon Prime (of course) and variety of other video apps. It comes with a voice powered remote and costs $99.
What makes it unique, besides the voice remote (although, Roku could use voice commands months ago through its Android and iOS apps) is that it can also play games. Amazon is selling an Xbox-like controller for the system for $39, and with that you will be able to stream games provided by Amazon as well. While Amazon is promising “thousands” of games within a month, right now they are promoting Minecraft Pocket Edition, Asphalt 8 and an exclusive shooter called Zero.
To power this, the Fire TV has far beefier specs than its competition. 2GB of RAM, a 1.7Ghz quad-core CPU, a dedicated Adreno 320 GPU and 8GB of storage.
The Amazon Fire TV also has an “ASAP” feature that will eliminate the need for buffering in many cases. It will predict what you are going to watch next and automatically cache it. If you are reading a movie description, it will start preparing in case you decide to watch it. If you are watching an episode of House of Cards on Netflix, once it is finished loading your current episode, it will start downloading the next, in preparation of your coming binge watching session.
As mentioned, it costs $99 and is available now.
Now that that is out of the way, enjoy Gary Busey, undoubtedly one of America’s top ten favorite (former?) drug users, As he struggles talking to a lamp, fishes, and technology. If anyone else was doing this, it would seem silly, unrealistic and lacking subtlety. But coming from Busey? The man who admitted to snorting coke off of his dog? Priceless.
