Google+ is still referred to as a “ghost town” by publications that should know better, and according to a new study, it’s just as popular as Twitter in the United States.

Published by Forrester, the research company recently surveyed over 60,000 U.S. adults to ask which social media sites they used.

22 percent said they visited Google+ at least once every month, the same as for Twitter, and the figure was higher than those who visited Pinterest, LinkedIn and Instagram.

“That means you can build a real follower base on Google Plus: On average, top brands have collected 90% as many fans on Plus as on Twitter. (In fact, the brands we studied have more followers on Google Plus than on YouTube, Pinterest and Instagram combined.)”

Forrester also analyzed brand engagement on seven social networks, which comprised over three million total interactions spread across 2500 posts.

While Facebook unsurprisingly came in first place at .073 percent, Google+ was barely behind at .069 percent, helping put the whole “ghost town” myth to rest.

“Brands’ Google Plus posts generated nearly as much engagement per follower as their Facebook posts — and almost twice as much engagement per follower as their Twitter posts.”

Google+ may be easy to put down, and uncharted territory for many brands, but ignorance is never a valid excuse.
