Pat Tillman is remembered today as an American hero on the 10th anniversary of his death.

The Pat Tillman story is tragic. You probably know it by now.

Turned down a NFL contract after 9/11 to enlisted in the Army with his brother. Later killed during a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan. Senior Army commanders lied to the Tillman family about the circumstances surrounding Pat’s death, even going forward with a phony eulogy at the funeral.

It wasn’t until weeks after Pat Tillman was buried the government informed his family how exactly he was killed. At the time of Tillman’s death the War in Iraq had become a public relations nightmare with images of abused prisoners at Abu Ghraib being shown every night on the evening news.

Jon Krakauer wrote in “Where Men Win Glory” that Tillman feared his death would be used as propaganda if he were KIA. His fears came true.

But enough of that sad stuff.

Pat Tillman paid the ultimately price and deserves proper recognition. No matter how he died.

10 years later and there are still questions about exactly what happened to Pat Tillman that day near the Pakistan border. Perhaps someday we’ll know.
