Creativity Counts: How to Get Creative with Your Workout

Creativity Counts: How to Get Creative with Your Workout image MP910220810Ask anyone who fell off the bandwagon with their New Year’s fitness resolutions: boring workouts that you dread and only do out of obligation will kill all motivation and enthusiasm for health and fitness. Why settle for dull exercises when you could shake it up with different reps? Target different parts of your body with a program that allows you to measure your progress, get results, and have fun all at once.

Rigid or dull exercises are a lot like strict diets that don’t work: Instead of putting energy into learning about what actually improves your health and energy, so many people try to learn a set of rules, staying away from foods simply because it’s on a list and not because of the knowledge of harmful ingredients. Focusing on movement and consistently being active will encourage a healthier lifestyle, just as eating clean because of an enriched understanding of food will lead to a lifelong interest in health and wellness.

But how does the couch potato suddenly become active, engaging in creative workouts?

  1. 1. Start small – celebrate small victories.

First and foremost, it’s important to commit to small, measurable goals. Rather than resolving to “lose weight,” make realistic goals like setting aside 30 to 45 minutes each afternoon or morning to work-out. If you ultimately want to run a marathon, you may need to focus on strengthening the muscles around your knees first by doing squats and other exercises to avoid injuries. Perhaps you need to commit to interval running (walking, sprinting or jogging) before you accomplish a marathon.

  1. Use every day props to mix it up and maximize your time.

A lot of resolution-makers backslide because their free-time hours are not conveniently aligned with the hours of the gym. Get rid of this excuse by using the props you have, especially if you are intimidated by some of the machines at the gym. Couch potatoes can use the couch for sofa squats, cushion crunches and incline push-ups! Get creative with the space around you; this is an invaluable tip for exercisers who travel, too.

  1. Integrate movement in your day-to-day routines.

Consider commuting by bike to work. Choose to take the stairs or park in the farthest parking spot. Encouraging a more active lifestyle – even in the small, every day moments – will prepare you for the right mindset when it comes to health and fitness. Even cleaning the house can be a great way to stay active throughout the day! Do not substitute these small actions for work-outs, but strive to implement creative ways to keep moving throughout the day so you will feel productive and be more inclined to work out rather than lounge on the couch. Get creative with health and fitness and you will find that it is much easier to turn intentions into actions!
