Kids these days with their video games and sugar drinks; they don’t know what it’s like to enjoy the great outdoors anymore! Granted, it’s not really their fault. Nationwide, recess time has been cut dramatically (some kids don’t even get any recess at all anymore). Since the implementation of No Child Left Behind, 20% of schools have had to shave off an average of 50 minutes or more of recess time per week to keep up. Kids who do poorly in school and on standardized tests or live below the poverty line, in particular, see less recess time than their classmates.
As children spend more and more time in classrooms, indoors, and glued to their computers, they are consuming more sugar and snack calories than ever before. Obesity is catching up with these kids and it’s turning into an epidemic. From 1980 to 2008, obesity in teenagers (12-19) grew from 5% to 18.1%. The average sugar drink size these days is over 20 ounces when back in the 1970s it was just 13.6 ounces.
