South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham joked in a private setting that “white men who are in male-only clubs are going to do great in my presidency.” These audio recordings provided to CNN also capture the senator cursing.
In the private meeting, Graham gave a dig about Baptists. He said, “They’re the ones who drink and don’t admit it,” which is similar to a joke he tells in public.
He also told the group, “I’m trying to help you with your tax status. I’m sorry the government’s so f**ked up.”
According to the CNN , two South Carolina Democrats received the recordings from an anonymous Gmail address. The two Democrats wish to remain anonymous as well.
Graham confirmed to CNN that he said everything in the recording. He was speaking to the Hibernian Society of Charleston earlier this month. This Irish-Catholic charity organization has an all-male membership.
Graham said the organization wants speakers “to be earthy, to make fun of yourself, to make fun of them. Then you say something serious and sit down. And if you talk for over 20 minutes, they throw something at you.”
The two-term Republican faces Democrat Brad Hutto for reelection on Tuesday. Graham is favored to win.
Hutto released a statement about the recording on his campaign site. “When behind the closed doors of a private club, Lindsey Graham let his true colors show. He is only interested in his own ambitions and the best interests of the wealthy donors he hopes will fund his possible presidential campaign.”
