All-Star guard Steph’s Curry’s wager with his mom is proving to pay huge dividends for the Golden State Warriors.
According to the San Jose Mercury-News, since engaging in a friendly wager with his mom aimed at cutting down on his turnovers, the Warriors have embarked on an eight game winning streak. And the little matter of Curry’s once rising turnovers also appears to be working itself out.
Over that same span, Curry has dished out 60 assists against just 15 turnovers.
“Over two in a game, I owe her some money,” said Curry. “And the Phoenix game (he had 10 turnovers), she racked up pretty heavily.” But shrewd floor-general that he is, Curry has figured out a scheme that allows him to somewhat keep the scales balanced. “If I go below two, I get the money back. That’s my incentive, my motivation.”
Warriors rookie coach Steve Kerr has called Curry’s assist to turnover ratio over the life of the team’s streak incredible “for a guy who handles the ball all the time and is relied on to score.”
Kerr added “he’s always been a high-risk, high-reward player. The last couple weeks he’s become a low-risk, high-reward player. I mean, it’s incredible, really. Because when you have that much talent, and there are so many options for you out there, it’s hard to have no-turnover games. He’s really walked that line perfectly between attack and manage, and it’s been beautiful to watch.”
Over their 13-2 start, Curry is leading the team 24.3 points and 7.6 assists a game against just three turnovers.
“Just trying to make the simple play, stay out of danger zones on the court and getting trapped,” he said of his transformation. “It’s allowing our offense to dictate where the open spaces are, and then I don’t have to make home-run plays and try to thread the needle.”
