6 Twitter Tricks You’ve Got To Stop Doing!

So you’ve heard all about how important it is to use Twitter as part of your social media strategy, along with Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and the list goes on! So much to do, so little time. I get it; you’re a busy blogger.

So you smash out a few tweets, smash out some more and keep linking to anything and everything you can think of. Unfortunately that’s the exact social media strategy that will have you being un-followed faster than you can say hashtag.

There are tricks aplenty when it comes to a successful Twitter strategy but there’s just as many “tips and tricks” that will hurt your brand too. Here are six Twitter tricks you’ve got to stop doing!

1. It’s All About You

Your Twitter followers know about you and your blog and you want to keep it that way. But is that all you’re interested in helping them with? Why not show your followers that you’re happy to share links to other useful content around the web that you know they’ll enjoy. Remember, it’s actually not all about you!

2. Acing Autopilot

There are plenty of tips and tricks about the place on how to set your Twitter marketing and messaging on “autopilot”. The thing is that your followers can spot an auto direct message a mile off. Unless you want to be un-followed fast, try connecting with your followers personally rather than with a ‘one size fits all’ DM!

3. Hashtag Hashtag Hashtag

Using hashtags can help people discover subjects on Twitter that are of interest to them. So it makes sense to add not just one but maybe five hashtags to your tweets right? Wrong. Sticking to one super relevant hashtag will bring you more success than going with multiples. Remember, less is more!

4. Buy Popularity

A common tip these days is to head to Fiverr and buy 1000 followers overnight. So tempting isn’t it. If you’re buying followers stop now! Instead, spend time attracting those people who love what you do and will spread the word virally for you, that way you’ll have followers that stick.

5. Copy Paste

Bloggers are always pressed for time so why not just copy and paste your tweets from your other social media efforts? Better still, just automatically have the same message blast out at the same time across all mediums. This trick is often used but why be like everyone else?

Give your followers interesting and unique content across all your social media accounts and they’ll not only keep following you but share even more of your content for free!

6. Follow to Un-Follow

It’s nice to think that if you follow someone on Twitter they’ll follow you back, but how would you feel if you discovered a few days down the track your new-found Twitter friend has unfollowed you. Not great I’m sure.

Well this is exactly one of the tricks many marketers practice and it really is bottom of the barrel. If you follow someone just so they follow you back and then you ditch them days later, your Twitter marketing strategy will indeed fail. Be sincere and you’ll see success – simple as that.
