One could argue the official start of the Attitude Era was WrestleMania 14 when Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship. The rise of the Texas Rattlesnake remains a major turning point in the wrestling industry. However, the process didn’t go as smoothly as Austin would have liked.
On a recent family-friendly episode of The Steve Austin Show, he was asked about his experiences working with Shawn Michaels:
“It was a real pain even getting to the match, and Shawn will tell you this, he wasn’t in a good place, physically or mentally,” Austin said of their WrestleMania 14 match. “He had a real bad attitude on him and didn’t feel like dropping the strap.” Austin would of course, go on to win the WWF Title at the event.
Austin elaborated on HBK’s attitude, specifying an open workout in Boston in which Michaels was hit with a battery which sent him over the edge. Neither he nor Mike Tyson, who was also present, knew if Michaels would come back to the workout after leaving. Tyson played the special enforcer in the match.
It was also said that The Undertaker was adamant in making sure Shawn Michaels actually lost the match at WrestleMania 14, according to Wrestling Inc. Undertaker had taped his fist and prepared to confront Michaels if he didn’t do the honors, confirming an infamous story in which has circulated for years.
Despite the outcome of the match, Austin wasn’t happy with it.
“I walked out of that thing as WWE Champion, but I told Vince that match was the drizzling sh-ts,” Austin said. He noted that Vince assured him it was fine and they accomplished what they needed to.
For months now, Austin continues to be rumored for a comeback. The WWE Hall of Famer retired in 2003 from in-ring competition and hasn’t returned since. Of course, the dream matchup of “Stone Cold vs. CM Punk” will always exist in the minds of WWE fans. After their iconic encounter on Monday Night Raw in 2011, fans will continue to clamor about the match until it happens.
According to the latest episode of The Steve Austin Show, Austin was asked about working another match, but adamantly denied that he was teasing a run in the WWE on one of his latest podcasts.
After addressing the question about his return to the ring, Austin was hit with a follow up about Brock Lesnar. When asked if Austin believed he could beat Lesnar if he did make a return, the WWE Hall of Famer quickly went into Stone Cold mode and made it clear he believes he would walk out of that match as the victor.
Despite Austin’s comments clearly just being a quick glimpse of the Stone Cold character the fans want to see, his playful jabs at Lesnar are sure to stir up the dirtsheets. As seen from his comments about a return, his words are taken out of context often, according to Bleacher Report.
“I’d consider anything if the perfect situation or opportunity arose and it would be more than a million-dollar question. I don’t want to sit here and promote a match, sell a match or talk about making a comeback. The dirt sheets, or whatever you call them, and I talk to Dave Meltzer and Wade Keller all the time and they’re nice guys and I would consider them friends. I see Dave at almost every MMA fight, but I don’t want to stir any pots or hint or tease anything.
People get their panties in a wad and say, “Stone Cold, either do it or not.” So, anything can happen, but I’m not going to endorse, promote, sell or tease anything in regards to a match.”
Though it doesn’t look to happen, we can still dream and discuss his past performances. So, how would you rate Austin’s match against Michaels?
