The Boko Haram leader has denied Nigeria’s claim of a ceasefire agreement. He also said in a video released Saturday that the abducted girls had been married off and converted to Islam.
Two weeks ago Nigerian officials announced that they had made a deal with the Islamic terror group. The officials said the 200 girls who were abducted from a boarding school in April would be released in the agreement.
The Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, said in the video, “Don’t you know the over 200 Chibok schoolgirls have converted to Islam? They have now memorized two chapters of the Korah.”
His response to their planned released was, “The issue of the girls is long forgotten because I have long ago married them off.”
Shekau stated that the negotiator Nigerian officials claimed they worked with in Chad didn’t represent the Islamic terror group. The leader said the negotiator will be killed if they find him.
In the video, Shekau promised Boko Haram would make more attacks and more war. He also claimed they were holding a German hostage.
Recently, according to CNN , members of the group kidnapped over 60 young women and girls from Christian villages in northeast Nigeria.
The name Boko Haram loosely translates to “Western education is forbidden.” Members of the group have abducted around 500 women in the past five years.
Outrage over these abductions has spread through Nigeria and around the world. In April when the 200 girls were taken, the social media campaign “Bring Back Our Girls” went viral.
Boko Haram plans to impose strict Sharia law across Nigeria. The region is split between a mostly Muslim north and a Christian south. Ultimately, the Islamic terror group wants a religious state and the current government to be destroyed.
