Carmelo Anthony is finally admitting to himself what most in NBA circles have now been contending for months.
“Chicago was the one from Day 1. It was perfect,” Anthony said of the franchise that finished second to the New York Knicks in last summer’s free-agency sweepstakes for him. “They were looking for someone like me to come in and take them to the next level. So it was perfect. There was one point in time I was like, ‘Oh, I’m going.”’
Anthony voices his revelations in a soon-to-be-aired documentary entitled “Carmelo Anthony: Made in NY.” The film takes a behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day machinations in Anthony arriving at his decision and the actions taken by the team’s battling for his services. Throughout the film, Anthony makes clear his decision came down to the Knicks and Bulls, and that the Lakers and Rockets were eliminated early in the process.
With the Knicks in full rebuilding mode as they seek to fully incorporate Phil Jackson’s triangle offense, the Bulls afforded Anthony his best chance to win now. But in the end, his familiarity with and love of New York City proved too much for him to walk away.
“I just felt like this is where I need to be. I feel like I’m built for this. New York, this is who I am,” Anthony said. “I came here because I wanted to be here, I wanted to feel what it’s like to be in New York. Me, as a competitor, I hate to lose and I’ll do whatever I’ve got to do to win. I know some people expected this, but I’m not like, ‘Oh yeah, we lose tonight, it’s cool.’ No, I want to win. That’s the hurtful thing for me. I don’t care who said this was expected, I want to win.”
Now experiencing back spasms, Anthony is isted as questionable for Friday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
