During the performance of The Star Spangled Banner prior to Monday night’s NFL game, Indianapolis Colts Wide Receiver Reggie Wayne was seen holding back tears.
The impressive rendition of the national anthem, performed with a trumpet just before the game between the Colts and the New York Giants, has been widely praised online. The flag that was presented at the time was a canvas that was so big it occupied much of the football field and had to be held by several people.
While the song was being played, with very little musical accompaniment, cameras grabbed reactions from people on both sides of the football game. Eli Manning could be seen paying his respects, as could his coach, Tom Coughlin.
It was Reggie Wayne’s reaction, however, that has received the most attention. The professional football player was clearly moved to emotion by the fabulous version of The Star Spangled Banner. Was it the flawless performance of the trumpeter that affected him? Was it the expansive version of the American flag? Or some combination of the two?
Maybe he’s like that at every game, and the camera simply doesn’t capture it. Maybe he’s a football player who simply loves his country.
Whatever the reason for his reaction, there’s no doubt that this was one of the finest versions of the national anthem that has ever been performed.
