Singer Katie Melua had a spider extracted from her ear that had been living there for a week. Melua posted pictures of the tiny creature on her Instagram account.

Melua said she had been troubled by a rustling sound in her ear and went to the doctor to have the problem fixed. The doctor discovered the spider, a member of the Salticidae, or jumping spider family, in her ear. The doctor then used a micro-vaccuum cleaner to remove the arachnid.

Melua, the 30-year old British pop singer, believes the spider found its way into her ear via a pair of earbuds. “‘Basically I used these old in-ear monitors to block out sound on a flight. A little spider must have been in them and crawled inside my ear and stayed there for the week,” she wrote on Instagram. She then added a photo of the spider, alive, in a small container. The spider was set free.

A spokesperson for Katie Melua said “The ear specialist said he’d never in his career taken out a live bug before. Plenty of dead ones. When it was out it was pretty tiny. Katie kept it in the test tube and released it in her garden when she got home. Apart from shuffling and random noises in her ear, the spider was no bother for the entire week it lived there. She was relieved it was what it was as she was worried she was losing her hearing.”

The National Institute of Health advise people not to stick their finger in their ear if they believe an insect may be living inside. The insect could bite or sting. It is suggested to turn your head to the side and see if the insect crawls out on its own.

Katie Melua is a singer well known for her hits such as “Nine Million Bicycles” and “The Closest Thing To Crazy.”
