Rumor has it a new animated Star Wars may be right over the horizon, and we’re getting a follow up to ‘Rebels’ in 2017 or 2018. The long running series is in the motions of a comeback, and the brand is evolving in the form of spin-offs, shows, comics, books, and new films while doing away with what was ‘The Expanded Universe’.

‘Star Wars Rebels’, which airs on Disney XD and takes place 5 years before ‘Episode IV: A New Hope’, is doing a good job at building up the hype for the upcoming trilogy kick starter ‘Episode VII: The Force Awakens’. Talk is already beginning about the follow up to ‘Rebels’, and it seems like we have another Star Wars TV series on the way.

The new animated Star Wars is apparently in the planning process right now by Disney and Lucasarts. ‘Star Wars Rebels’ is going to run for 3 or 4 seasons, and the follow up to it will occur during the timeline of the upcoming trilogy, meaning 30 some years after ‘Return of the Jedi’. Seeing ‘Rebels’ will run for at least 3 seasons, we can expect the new animated Star Wars to come out in 2017 or 2018.

Disney and Lucasarts should carefully plan out the future projects of Star Wars, much like Marvel and DC has up to 2020. A slated timeline of upcoming releases may look something like this, though it is not official:

2014 – A New Dawn novel & Rebels animated series

2015 – Episode VII: The Force Awakens

2016 – Spinoff Film (Star Wars: Bounty Hunters maybe)

2017 – New Animated Series (and a possible book)

2018 – Episode VIII

A new Star Wars animated series could be coming in 2017 or 2018, and it will be the follow up to ‘Star Wars Rebels’. How do you feel about the way Star Wars is being handled for the future, and are you looking forward to another animated TV show?
