A study published by The British Journal found that people who drink a high intake of cow milk might die younger than other people.
Most are taught from their early school days that milk strengthens bones because of its high calcium content. However, the study concluded those who drank more than three glasses a day were harming their health rather than helping it.
The risk comes from the high levels of lactose and D-galactose (a type of sugar) in milk. The Swedish researchers from Uppsala University said increasing these levels in animals led to oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. Higher oxidative stress has been associated with aging, cancer, and cardiovascular death.
Two groups of 61,433 women and 45,339 men were tracked from 10-20 years after completing a questionnaire about their dietary habits, including how often they consumed milk, yogurt, and cheese
For the women, those who drank more than three glasses of milk a day had a higher risk of death than those who drank less than one. The researchers didn’t find a connection better higher milk consumption and reduced fracture risk.
Men had an even greater risk of death after high milk consumption due to cardiovascular death.
The study did not see an increased risk of fractures or death with other dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, and sour milk. Actually, cheese and fermented milk products decreased the rates of mortality and hip fractures by 10-15 percent. The researchers contribute this to the fact that fermented cheese has low levels of galactose and yogurt has the probiotic effects of bacteria.
The Washington Post also points out other problems associated with milk. Dairy has been linked to cause acne and 65 percent of the world can’t even digest high amounts of lactose after infancy. Some researchers have even suggested we don’t need to consume the drink at all.
This study may make you think twice the next time you have an urge to drink a glass of milk with cookies.
