President Obama may finally have a landmark in Hawaii named after him, a beach that was one of his favorite spots growing up. A proposal has been brought forth, by two Hawaiian councilmen, to change the name of Sandy Beach Park to President Obama Sandy Beach Park.
Councilmen Stanley Chang and Ernest Martin are the men that want the popular vacation spot named after our current president. Sandy Beach Park is a scenic spot on the east side of Oahu, with crushing waves and sparkling sand. It is also the most populated island in Hawaii.
Obama is a fan of bodysurfing, and he grew up doing it on Sandy Beach Park. He has even been seen on national television, during his 2008 presidential campaign, bodysurfing there.
Chang and Martin want to rename Sandy Beach Park to President Barack Obama Sandy Beach Park, since Obama is citizen of Hawaii and a lover of bodysurfing.
Chang has this to say, about naming the famous beach after Obama, “I think, as a state, we’re very proud that we have a Hawaii-born president. We don’t have any statues, monuments, anything named after him here.”
“We’ve already included funding in the past year’s budget for a plaque commemorating his love for bodysurfing there, and we hope to generate additional interest in the park,” Chang continues. “We hope to have it as an additional showcase for residents and visitors from all over the world.”
Along with the name change, they also want to improve the area with over a half-a-million dollars. This includes landscaping the beach, and making the parking lot better.
However, there are residents of Sandy Beach Park, and other people, that are not all in on naming the beach after President Obama.

Beachgoers on the matter say that they think the name should just be left alone. They also believe that though it may help bring more tourism to the beach, there is already enough people there, and it will just make it even more crowded.
President Barack Obama Sandy Beach Park is still a work in progress. If the name change happens, it will be sometime next week.
