Chris Rock hosted Saturday Night Live this week and may have gone too far in his opening monologue as he joked about terrorism.
Being a legendary comedian, Rock’s monologue was basically a mini-standup routine.
He introduced the show, “Yesterday was Halloween, tomorrow’s the New York City Marathon. Yes, scary, what could go wrong there, right? It’ll be all right, New York’s gonna be fine, just like Boston’s fine after the marathon.”
Twitter gave the best way to sum up the reaction to this opening line:
I’m laughing, but this Chris Rock monologue is a bit awkward….

Did Chris Rock just say, in the middle of Manhattan, that the Boston Marathon was the worst terrorist attack… #SNL

I love Chris Rock, but this SNL monologue is incredibly awkward and uncomfortable.

Though some found the introduction to the Boston bombing joke awkward, Chris Rock got some laughs as he furthered it. “I mean 26 miles is a long drive…People jogging for 26 miles, your knees are hurting, your knees are killing you, if you’re a woman there’s blood coming out of your titties.”
“You’ve been training for a year, you finally get to the finish line and somebody screams, ‘Run!’ Whoa, that is horrible, man.”
Then Rock talked about 9/11 and the construction of the Freedom Tower. He suggested that the name should be changed to “the Never Going In There Tower.”
“What do they have? Does this building duck? What were they thinking? Who’s the corporate sponser – Target? Stop it! In the same spot they put another skyscraper? What kind of arrogant Flloyd Mayweather crap is this?”
Chris Rock then joked about how in America we commercialize everything. “We’re only five years away from 9/11 sales.”
He proved his point by talking about Christmas, which most consider the funniest part of his monologue. “It’s Jesus’ birthday…From what I’ve read, Jesus is the least materialistic person to ever roam the earth – no bling on Jesus. Jesus kept a low profile and we turned his birthday into the most materialistic day of the year. Matter of fact, we have the Jesus birthday season. It’s a whole season of materialism.”
What do you think of Chris Rock’s monologue? Was it funny, did he go too far, or did he do a mix of both? Let us know in the comments!
