At Finance Patch we fully understand that commuting to work is often a necessary evil. At the same time, a recent study has found that “mega-commutes” of 50-miles or more, can actually be harmful not only to your pocketbook, but also your health.

According to Reuters, approximately 600,000 of Americas 10.8 million commuting workers are considered “megacommuters.” Those drivers spend a minimum of 90 minutes per day driving to and from work.

Reuters spoke to mega-commuter Kay Phillips of Elon, N.C., she drives 2.5 hours each way to her job, five days a week. Based on those numbers she estimates a time and fuel cost of $43,000. Phillips admits that she was always worried about the toll such a long commute was having on her life.

According to a Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, which surveyed Americans about daily commutes and their effects, commuters with long trips suffer from much higher levels of obesity, cholesterol, pain, fatigue and anxiety.

In comparison workers in small towns tend to travel only 14 minutes.

Despite the health and money effects, driving during a megacommute is seen more favorably than a 30 minute bus ride, the type of transportation associated with the lowest level of happiness and overall satisfaction.
