Like any business, negotiations are part of the game. That’s why we’re not surprised when, after we present a proposal, there is some discussion on the scope of work. What does surprise me, is the somewhat constant misconception of what it takes to build a website.
Optimization
Most frequently, the issue in debate is optimization. We clearly state when this is, or is not included on a proposal. Of course, when it’s not included, prospects ask us why. This is when we present one of two answers 1) you don’t have the budget or 2) it doesn’t make sense for your business model.
We’ll often have prospects ask for “just a little optimization.” This would be great if ‘just a little’ actually did anything for our customers. Either you build a tool to generate leads, or you build an online brochure. Something in the middle is a disservice to our clients. This isn’t to say that we don’t do any optimization. We’re just not building in enough content and strategy to have the site found for a list of viable keywords.
Custom Design
When dealing with construction, people realize that it takes more than a few hundred dollars to renovate a room. When you damage your car, even fixing a small scratch can be $1,000 dollars. It’s not that the paint or supplies cost that much. It’s that the process takes time and you need skilled laborers to do the work.
The same is true for websites. Sure, many people have the ability to code a basic site. What many people don’t have, is the ability to do custom design with a level of detail that works well from desktop monitors to tablets and smart phones. Think of that custom calendar as adding custom molding to your house. The custom map is an upgraded counter top in your kitchen. If we cut corners, that’s all you will notice.
It’s also important to think about what is really important. You don’t need crown molding or granite counter tops to redo your kitchen. You want these things and it’s up to you to determine if there is enough value in the investment.
Bottom Line
If we are going to build a website, we want it to be something that will work for you. We want expectations clearly set on how the site will function. We want to spend time on things that you will get value from.
No, I Won’t Just Build You a Website.
