The Chicago Bears have declared oft-injured receiver Brandon Marshall out for the season after he suffered a collapsed lung during Thursday night’s 41-28 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Marshall, who remains hospitalized at a Chicago hospital, also suffered a pair of broken ribs on the second quarter play where he took a knee to the back and ribs after being hit by Cowboys safety Barry Church.
“I went over to the hospital last night to see him,” Bears coach Marc Trestman told ESPN. “He was in very good spirits. He’s got some healing to do.”
Marshall’s latest injury caps a season of major disappointment for him personally and the Bears as a team. After amassing 1,339 receiving yards last season, Marshall has struggled to just 854 this year, being limited in several games with a pair of ankle injuries. Projected as preseason Super Bowl contenders, the Bears have struggled to a 5-8 record.
After walking off the field under his own power, Marshall left Soldier Field in an ambulance and in obvious pain and discomfort.
“It looked kind of like an innocent hit,” said Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. “I didn’t see it that well. He’s a big guy and has taken a lot of crazy hits over the years. He doesn’t stay down. So whenever he stays down, you know something is seriously wrong. We’re all worried about him. He’s our guy, and hopefully he’ll get back sooner rather than later.”
No one seems nearly as certain of what Trestman’s future might hold. NFL.com reports Trestman’s ongoing future with the team remains very much up in the air beyond this season’s final three games.
With Marshall sidelined for the rest of the year, the Bears are expected to turn to a platoon of second-year wideout Marquess Wilson and seven-year veteran Josh Morgan.
