ESPN has a new article up with quotes from former WWE Superstar CM Punk on his upcoming UFC debut. Below are some highlights:
Brock Lesnar and if Punk can take a punch:
“I suppose the easy answer to what Brock’s shortcomings were that he probably needed to spar more. Everyone always likes to say Brock hated getting hit in the face. I don’t know who likes getting hit in the face, but I guess he did need to work on his stand-up defense. You get punched in the nose, your eyes water. When it happens, will I turn around and run? No, that’s not going to happen. I’m going to do my best to avoid that punch, but if it lands, I’ll be OK.”
If he felt like WWE was a real sport:
“That’s a fascinating question. I think it varies. Some days, I felt like, ‘Yeah, what we do makes us athletes.’ And then there were situations when I’d feel pretty silly about what I was doing — if you’ve got to dress up like Santa or you’re getting beat up by Santa. You’re watching part of the show, thinking it’s a little suspect.’ Overall, pro wrestling is no joke, though. Everybody in it is an athlete to some degree.
“You’ll find comparisons [to the physical needs] between the two. Cardiovascular speaking, that was my shtick. I was never going to be the biggest or most chiseled, but nobody was ever going to make me tired in the ring. Endurance is something I definitely have. There are a lot of similarities in that aspect. It’s go, go, go. I think there is a friendly competition between the wrestlers to see who the best is. Who can blow the other one up cardiovascularly. That was always kind of fun.”
In related news, MMA fighter Jason David Frank, better known as the Green Power Ranger, has challenged CM Punk to a MMA fight and immediately called out Punk after Punk signed with UFC earlier this month. When Punk was asked about Frank’s challenge during media interviews earlier this month, Punk blew it off and acted like he was not familiar with Frank.
“I like CM Punk, I think he’s a great guy. I’ve been watching all of his interviews, we’ve been on tour together. I’m not sure why he says he doesn’t know me,” Frank told FOX Sports. “I’ve done the Wizard World (conventions) with him and even back two years ago he was saying that ‘your fans want to see me fight’ and somebody came to his panel and said something about fighting Jason David Frank and he said ‘oh yeah, the fans are already talking about it’ and then he said ‘which color Power Ranger is he?’ so he knows who I am.”
Frank went on to say that it annoyed him when Punk said that he had not heard of his challenge because it received considerable media attention. Frank stated that a fight between the two makes sense since they both come from the entertainment industry with Punk coming “from fake wrestling.” He noted that he would definitely defeat Punk, and that Punk looks like he regrets signing with the UFC.
“I’m not going to lose. He’s not hungry. He looked like he regrets the deal. He looks scared, he looked nervous. Me too, I’d get nervous too being in front of people, but the difference is he’s not hungry. I’m hungry. I’m hungry because I want this fight. I’ve wanted this for two years. He needs to figure it out because there’s way too much hype in this. He can continue to ignore me and he can go to bed every night and go to sleep and know that he’s been punked.
I wish him the best, but he doesn’t know what this world is.”
What do you think of Frank’s comments? Should Punk accept his challenge to a fight?
