Archaeologists may have just found Jesus’ teaching location. The discovery was made in the ancient Israeli town of Magdala, which makes up the present day city of Migdal, located off the shore of the Galilee Sea. This town is also believed to be the birthplace of Mary Magdalene, who is believed to have been one of Christ’s most passionate and fervent followers.

The Catholic organization Legionaries of Christ originally purchased property in the area and even uncovered ancient ruins in 2009. The land was initially to be used as grounds for a hotel resort. However, during excavations in preparation for the construction, synagogue remains were unearthed.

Construction crew members have now been replaced by archaeologists and historians, many of whom are confident there is sufficient evidence to believe the town is where Jesus spent most of his life and imparted his words of wisdom to his disciples. Some of the discovered relics include Jewish ritual baths, a limestone block carved with a menorah, and the remains of a temple hallway with an elaborately decorated mosaic floor.

Excavations are currently underway and several of the artifacts have already been taken to the pope.

With Jesus’ teaching location found, archaeologists are potentially standing at the spot where Christ taught his followers 2,000 years earlier.

In an interview with Haaretz, Father Eamon Kelly made the following statements:

“This is the first synagogue ever excavated where Jesus walked and preached.”

Father Kelly also went on to say that while the cities of Bethlehem and Jerusalem are more commonly associated with Jesus, Magdala and northern Israel is where Jesus actually spent most of his life.

Experts believe the synagogue was built sometime around 1 AD with extensive renovations made in 40 AD. The structure was most likely destroyed by the Romans in 67 or 68 AD during their first war with the Jews.

With Jesus’ teaching location being found right before Christmas, the discovery becomes that much more significant for the faithful. The location could very well be the same ground where the son of God shared the fruits of his knowledge.
