In the latest Ferguson news, a man was beaten outside his car and bludgeoned to death by a group of hammer-wielding assailants. The victim was 32-year-old Bosnian immigrant Zemir Begic, who was inside his car after returning from a St. Louis bar. Out of nowhere, a group of teenagers approached his vehicle and began violently pounding on it. When Begic stepped out to confront the teens, he was relentlessly beaten. His wife, who was with him as he was assaulted, watched helplessly and in horror.
According to his wife in an interview with KSDK:
‘The last thing he did before he actually died was pull me out of the way and put himself in front of me, basically giving up his life for me.’
Since news broke of the senseless murder, members of the Bosnian community have expressed their outrage. Many believe that Begic was targeted in a retaliatory attack for the shooting death of Michael Brown by white police officer Darren Wilson. Authorities, though, do not believe at this point that the murder was racially motivated or that there is any connection with the riots going on in Ferguson.
In the meantime, two teenage suspects have been taken into custody, while a third is still on the loose but has been identified. The suspects are described as black and Hispanic.
Another Bosnian immigrant, Seldin Dzananoic, has also come forward and reported being attacked by a group of teens with hammers about an hour before Begic’s murder. The man, though, was fortunate to only escape with minor injuries.

News of a white man beaten near Ferguson has raised the ire of many conservative commentators, many of whom are pointing to the hypocrisy of those like Al Sharpton and Eric Holder. According to critics, these race agitators express outrage over white-on-black crime, but turn a blind eye when it’s black-on-black or black-on-white, both which are far more prevalent than white police officers shooting black men.
St. Louis has one of the largest Bosnian immigrant populations, numbering at about 70,000. Begic immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1996. With a white man beaten to death near Ferguson, there are worries that race relations are only going to erode even further than it already has.
