Over the years, I have seen thousands of clients; some struggle in their job search while others win almost instantaneously. Success isn’t always about their accomplishments; it’s generally about the job seekers’ attitude and outlook on life. A key attribute in outperforming your peers during a job search is a commitment to eliminate red flags and negativity and move forward to the Winner’s Circle.

Employers base a candidacy on both business skills, or areas of expertise, and your personal attributes. A lot has to do with a cultural fit in an age where a team contribution is vital. Too many people are disengaged during their job search, distracted by negative thoughts and a lack of direction.

The successful job searcher embraces the opportunity to advance and seek a new challenge. Poise and deportment play a huge role in how people initially characterize you. First impressions count! It has become apparent to me, over many years, that the initial introduction can sway opinions either way.

Prudently managing your online profile is another attribute of a successful job seeker. In the age of digital recruitment, it is extremely likely a potential employer will Google your name long before any in person meeting. The results populated by Google forms the first impression of you and could also sway the hiring decision either way. A successful job seeker eliminates any digital dirt and actively updates their social profiles and posts career-related information on sites including LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.

Your professional image is also tied to the online reputation of your references. Always conduct a similar Google search on the individuals who have agreed to be references during your job search. The successful job searcher verifies no digital dirt can be associated with their job hunt, either under their name or that of their references.

As Winston Churchill once stated:

“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”

A job seeker who exudes positivity, presents a professional image accompanied by a solid handshake and rigidly embraces a job search as a full time gig, will achieve success and win the trophy. Are you ready to enter the Winner’s Circle?
